China is making huge strides in its economy, but remains very uncomfortable with the internet and other freedoms. This lag-time will haunt the country as it moves into the 21st century and assumes a -- if not the -- major leadership role among nations. Banning Wikipedia is a silly but telling symbol of how stuck China still is between centuries.
Wikipedia is hardly a political site on the Net. Nonetheless, it is blocked on the mainland and has been except for a brief time in 2005. But Wikipedia is just one of many many apolitical sites subject to China's net-police, and it is hard to judge which will be allowed and which will not.
China has some way to go on this score. But it is important to remember how caught between past and present the country is as it goes through its economic development. It is an especially good thing to keep in mind when investing in the country.

China is going to need to open up if it really wants to become a global players. You can't ask people to be creative and entrepreneurial and then put blinders on them.
